Museum Musings: The MET Summer 2022

     I had the absolute privilege of making a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City! I had a small list of works I wanted to see, and I will share some highlights now below. Mostly due to its being a rainy Monday morning, the MET was packed, but luckily I am a member (got it for my birthday)! I highly recommend, because we got a discount on our merch and all got in free. 


SECOND FLOOR AMERICAN PAINTING



Young Mother Sewing by Mary Cassatt


    Our journey began on the second floor in the American paintings. I love Mary Cassatt and have studied her work before. Her Zooming In is linked here. I not only love her subject matter, but the way she presents these scenes in such a tender way.


Madame X by John Singer Sargent


    I have already expressed my love for this painting and its story before. Aside from the history behind the painting, John Singer Sargent may be my favorite American artist. Zooming In linked here. From the post: 'This is the portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau painted by John Singer Sargent. It caused quite the commotion in  19th century Paris. Madame Pierre Gautreau was famed in the Parisian society for her stunning beauty and porcelain- pale skin. The original painting depicted the woman with the strap of her dress falling off of her right shoulder. This was so poorly received by the Salon, where it debuted, that Sargent repainted this part of the portrait. Unfortunately the damage was done, so he moved from the city.'


SECOND FLOOR AMERICAN PAINTING




The Harvesters by Pieter Bruegel the Elder


    Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Northern Renaissance painter. Much like the rest of his work, The Harvesters depicts a quaint, domestic scenes in immense detail. Bruegel draws the eye to the foreground and through his rows of wheat, but he does not sacrifice detail in the background.


Esther before Ahasuerus by Artemisia Gentileschi


    Artemisia Gentileschi has gotten her share of fame in the last years in the art community. This was my first time seeing her work in person, and I was amazed. I loved the intricate detail and emotion of her work.




Love Letter by Jean Honoré Fragonard 


    I have recently been enjoying the Rococo. Post on the Rococo linked. The MET had a very good collection of Fragonard and Rococo as a whole! I love this painting due to the expression on the figure's face. She is mysterious, but also joyous due to her potential love.

Holiday Gifts I Gave and Received 2021

Greek Mythology by Liv Albert


   This book was very high on my Christmas list, as I just started listening to her podcast about the same topic. I am so happy that I received this book, and I have begun reading it. Wonderful podcast and book!
    



Art and Illusion by E. H. Gombrich 


    I was gifted this book from a family member who is very knowledgable about art theory. This book focuses  on artists' ability to depict 3D objects in a 2D space. 




The Twelve Lives of Alfred Hitchcock by Edward White


    I absolutely love this book! I have started it and can say that the format of this book is wonderful. There are 12 sections- each outlining a section of the filmmaker's life.

Out of the Ordinary: Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Associates 


    I have a dear family member who admires the work of Venturi and Scott Brown (highly recommend their architecture- post to come). This book was originally an exhibition guide for their firm's work.

    I was gifted all three of these things and absolutely love them. If you follow the AHOD instagram (and you should), you know that I adore art history pins.

Holiday Gift Guide 2021

 As the holidays swiftly sneak up on gift-givers, here is a list of some ideas for the art lovers on your list (or for yourself to suggest to others perhaps). For reference CLICK HERE for last year's Gift Guide. 


Room Decorations: 
    As an art lover, one of my favorite gifts to receive is art history posters! I have four different posters in my room. The two shown up above are from Etsy. The subject of the posters can depend on the person's interests. For example, I am a big fan of Abstract Expressionism, so I have a Kandisky and Rothko. 




Museum Merch: 
    While I cannot vouch for others, I love having clothes, bags, and other items that show my support for my favorite museums. Last year I received a few of these items and love them so much. This merch can be from any museum. Here are a few suggestion museums (click for the link): 



Pins From Pin Museum: 
    While the least expensive, probably my favorite gifts are art history pins for jackets, backpacks, and tote bags. The Pin Museum has so many art works to choose from! I love them so much!

Guide to Art History: San Francisco

    Traveling to California over the summer holiday? Use this as a rough itinerary or simply chose a few to visit. 





San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: 


    The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art or SFMOMA has one of the best reputations in San Francisco. Their collection of modern art is expansive, some of the most notable including Femme au chapeau by Matisse, Frieda and Diego Rivera by Frida Kahlo, a Wayne Thiebaud painting, and so many more. This is a must visit on your visit. 





De Young Museum: 


    Part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the De Young Memorial Museum houses American art from the 17th century to present day. Not only does this museum have a diverse collection including art from Asia, the Americas, Oceania, and Africa, but it also has a wonderful observation tower from the 9th floor. 





Asian Art Museum: 


    The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco has a collection of exclusively Asian art that spans from ancient empires to today's artists. The collection of this museum is divided by floors. For example, the art of South and Southeast Asia are both on the 3rd floor. This museum is very important to visit if you are an ancient art lover!!

San Francisco has so much to offer in the art world, so please visit some (or all) of the above! :)

Art News: Louis Kahn India Dormitories Threatened

 As an art lover, I feel it is a duty of mine to stay informed about events in the art world, good and bad. Even if you are just a person who is interested in art, it is always good to understand the goings-on in the art world.

    I recommend  you read this. It is very important. Louis Kahn designed these dormitories in India. The plan was for them to be taken down. The demolition plans have been halted; however, this does not mean it still will not happen. Please read to learn more.

Art News: Nazi Art in American Army Warehouse

    One of the largest collections of Nazi propaganda and art is actually in a USA army warehouse from WWII. This art ranges from propaganda posters to paintings to sculpture. I highly recommend that you read the above article.

Art History Terms to Know: The Caravaggisti

    Caravaggio (click the name to read more about him) was a trailblazer in the Italian Baroque. He was a painter who used tenebrism and lead the Baroque movement to its height. 




    Caravaggio was very protective of his artistic style throughout his life. He even went so far as to threaten painters that he believed were copying (Caravaggio was know as a hot head). However after his death in 1610, a group of many artists came to be known as his followers. While none of these artists met or worked with Caravaggio, this group of followers became known as the Caravaggisti. One example is Artemisia Gentileschi.

Holiday Gifts I Gave and Received 2020

    Hello! I hope you had a very happy holiday season! I know that it game me a time to recharge. Today I hope you enjoy this post about holiday gifts I gave and received. This can also be used to get gift ideas going forward. Also, reference THIS LINK for the Art Lovers' Holiday Gift Guide 2020.  

BOOKS: 

    I got a number of books this year, and I also gifted a few. 

  1. The 99% Invisible City

            I gifted this book to a family member this year. I have read parts of this book. I absolutely love it! This book is a field guide to urbanistic cites, both functional and aesthetic.

      2.  Women in Art

            This is a book that I received. While I have not read it yet, it has been on my art history TBR list for a long time. I am so excited to read this one!!

      3. Abstract Expressionism 

            I have mentioned the Taschen reference books before on Art History: On Display. I did ask for these, and I am so very glad I got them. If you know an art history buff, these are a wonderful gift. They have one in almost every movement and artist. 

       4. From A to Eames

            I have done a bit of speaking about Eames before (in THIS post, they are in the slideshow). This book goes alphabetically through Mid-Century Modern artists and vocabulary. Though the name is a bit misleading, it is not all about Eames. There is a small section about their work.


GAMES: 

    While I have only gotten a few, they have been very fun!!

        1. ArtSmart Card Game

                I received this game and have already played it many times! It was made by The Art Institute of Chicago. I highly recommend this game for all ages. It is fun and educational to all. 

        2. Old Masters Memory Game

                Again I have already played this game along with my family. This a game is a bit more challenging that the above, but it is still fun. It includes masters like Caravaggio, Gentileschi, Durer, and Titan.

           I have already worn this sweatshirt. I love it so far! As I am writing this post, I am wearing it!

    2. Met Campus Long-Sleeve Tee

        While I have not worn it yet, I am looking forward to it! This item was on my list, and it should be on yours too. 

    3. Met Facade Women's Tee

        This is probably one of my favorite gifts that I got this year!

    4. Museum Favorites 100 Postcards

        I love these! These postcards are so cool, and I will soon be using them!

Teens Take the Met 2020

     Last night (November 6, 2020) was Virtual Teens Take the Met, given by the Metropolitan Museum of Art along with many partnerships. This was my first year attending. I thoroughly enjoyed every session that I went to.





    Teens Take the Met is an event that lasts one afternoon. Every hour there are many activities to chose from. I took a zoom photography course about lighting, made paper mosaics, got a chance to know some people my age who are interested in art, and overall had a great time. I highly encourage going to this event if you can.

Art Lovers' Holiday Gift Guide 2020

     With the holidays quickly approaching, the time has come to start thinking about giving the perfect gifts to everyone. Do you have an art lover on your list? If so here are some perfect gifts that they are sure to love!! I have split it up into a couple different groups so you can judge what is the best based on who you are buying for! ** Note: It is always a great idea to go to museum websites to find gifts there too. ** All gifts are linked in the title. 


BOOKS

    1. ArtCurious 

    I have mentioned this book before and praised the podcast, but this is truly a perfect gift for people who love reading and learning about art history. I am still reading this book, but to get an understanding of what it is, listen to the ArtCurious Podcast. 

    2. The Museum of Lost Art

    I got this book last Christmas, and I love it so much. It tells a narrative of lots of lost art and how they became this way. It is split into sections; Theft, War, Accident, etc. It is so interesting and I would highly recommend this book. 

    3. 30,000 Years of Art

    30,000 Years of Art is a detailed book going through the years with art. It covers all time periods and all corners of the earth. From Venus of Willendorf to Contemporary art , this book has it all and explains it beautifully. 

Toys for Children:

    This game is so fun. I have posted on Instagram about it. It is a monoploy game, but the properties are pieces of art, the moving tokens are all figures in art, and it is overall so much better than any other game I've ever played. 





    2. Puzzles

    The website linked above offers many options for puzzles. I recently gifted one of these, and they loved it. The website has options including the one shown above, a Water Lilies one, a Van Gogh self- portrait, and more! Such a good gift for an early art lover.





    3.  Architectural Legos

    I know someone who loves these so much. They are a perfect opportunity to teach children about architecture. There are many different buildings available, click the link above.



    I have heard nothing but amazing things about this game. It looks super fun and like a great way to inspire young children to learn about art.

    1. Artsy

    If you are looking for a gift for someone who  has an appreciation for art or a specific art or artist, it is a wonderful idea to get them a print. These prints can be of a specific work. Artsy is a wonderful resource for this. 

    2. Etsy

    Etsy is another wonderful resource for prints and art. Shopping from Etsy is also awesome, because you are supporting small businesses in this time of need.
