It is due to archeologists that the modern world has knowledge of a past one. Most archeologists work in excavation and unearthing artifacts, to gain an understanding of the past. Archeology encompasses more than just prehistoric or ancient history, but goes even further into the modern era.

Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow

Bio of the work:

Title: Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow

Date: 1929

Medium: Oil on canvas

Museum: The Kunsthaus Zürich

Analysis:

Mondrian was an abstract painter and claimed to be what is called a Neo-Plastist. Being inspired by the cubist reduction of forms to their simplest, Mondrian experimented with blocks of color during the 1920s and 30s. Instead of using fluid forms like his contemporaries, Mondrian composed his paintings of structured, but expressive forms. His style quickly diverged into "De Stijl" or "the style" which was adopted by the Bauhaus in Germany. Mondrian tries to express an impression and a feeling through his structured compositions.

As shown above, the facades of Greek classical monuments have many elements! These are certainly not all of the elements, but many of these are commonly used in art history classes and discussions.

Cornice: includes pediment and surrounding decorations; the true triangle shape of the facade
Pediment: usually relief decorated triangle shape on the inside of the cornice
Frieze: strip of alternating relief stone on all sides of monument; made up of metopes and triglyphs
Metope: small relief squares within the frieze
Triglyph: three small, vertical grooves between metopes in the frieze
Architrave: thin strip of stone below the frieze
Doric Columns: the most simple of the Greek columns- no base and a small round top
Stylobate: large set of steps, forming the foundation of the temple

This book was very high on my Christmas list, as I just started listening to her podcast about the same topic. I am so happy that I received this book, and I have begun reading it. Wonderful podcast and book!

Art and Illusion by E. H. Gombrich

I was gifted this book from a family member who is very knowledgable about art theory. This book focuses on artists' ability to depict 3D objects in a 2D space.

The Twelve Lives of Alfred Hitchcock by Edward White

I absolutely love this book! I have started it and can say that the format of this book is wonderful. There are 12 sections- each outlining a section of the filmmaker's life.

West Side Story album on vinyl

Out of the Ordinary: Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Associates

I have a dear family member who admires the work of Venturi and Scott Brown (highly recommend their architecture- post to come). This book was originally an exhibition guide for their firm's work.

Metropolitain Museum of Art Tote and Pins
