Art History Terms to Know: Greek Doric Order Elements

    As shown above, the facades of Greek classical monuments have many elements! These are certainly not all of the elements, but many of these are commonly used in art history classes and discussions. 

1. Cornice: includes pediment and surrounding decorations; the true triangle shape of the facade 
2. Pediment: usually relief decorated triangle shape on the inside of the cornice
3. Frieze: strip of alternating relief stone on all sides of monument; made up of metopes and triglyphs
4. Metope: small relief squares within the frieze
5. Triglyph: three small, vertical grooves between metopes in the frieze
6. Architrave: thin strip of stone below the frieze
7. Doric Columns: the most simple of the Greek columns- no base and a small round top
8. Stylobate: large set of steps, forming the foundation of the temple
